Bulldozer – Very Flexible and Powerful Equipment
Jul 1st
In previous times, bulldozing was a term used to describe the action done when a force is applied to push through a lot of obstacles. But by the year 1930s and up until now, it is already a term coined to a very effective machine used for construction that uses great force in order to get through a lot of obstacles and very hard to push structures using manual labor alone. The bulldozer is a vehicle with a large metal plate in front of it called a blade and it is the part of the machine that is responsible for pushing through different types of obstacles.
The different bulldozer manufacturers have created varied attachments that can be applied to the equipment. You can choose from the assortment of applications depending on the tasks that you want it to perform. There is a different attachment that can be used for construction purposes and even when you do agricultural work like logging. These attachments have made the bulldozer a very flexible machine for different types of working area.
A good example of the attachments that can be applied to this kind of construction equipment is the ripper. It is commonly found on very large bulldozers that you will see on quarrying and mining sites. From the name itself, it is used to rip and break down the surface of the rock formation into pieces so that it will be easier to handle. Once they are broken into pieces, it can already be available for use as raw materials needed by the industry.
One safety feature of the bulldozer is its canopy. It is part of the machine that is attached and located at the upper portion of the construction equipment. It serves as the roof of the machine that will prevent any damage to the machine and most especially injury to the operator. Since its job is to push through any obstacles like for instance breaking down of rocks, there can be some debris that will fall to the machine. Without the canopy, the function of the machine can be affected and the life of the operator can be in grave danger.
When choosing this kind of construction equipment that is involved in very heavy duty tasks, you must make sure that you have purchased something that is very durable and of good quality. Selecting a good quality bulldozer will benefit you as the owner and most especially your workers. It will be efficient in its work and you will be assured that it will perform its tasks. Moreover, having construction equipment with good quality will somehow aid in the safety of your workers when it comes to their work.
Bulldozers are very useful equipments for different areas because it is the machine used to provide the force needed to break down into smaller pieces structure which can be considered as obstacles. This is a very flexible machine with the use of different attachments that can be applied to it. That is why, choose wisely the bulldozer that you will purchase so that you will benefit from the machine in your work.
There are a lot of bulldozer manufacturers today that will provide you with quality and durability when it comes to your equipment. For more details about how to purchase this kind of machine, view http://bull-dozer.org/.
Is Visqueen Right For Your Project?
Jun 30th
Visqueen has become the generic name for plastic sheeting, just as Kleenex has become the generic name for tissue. When someone asks for Visqueen, they are referring to a lesser grade of plastic sheeting. The plastic sheeting known as Visqueen has become a generic name for Construction and Agricultural Grade Polyethylene sheeting (C&A film)? Did you know that Visqueen is actually a company in the UK? C&A film contains up to 25% post consumer recycled content, and is made from the least expensive resins available at any given time. While it is excellent for use in many projects, we do not feel it is ideal for any use that requires sustained strenght such as a tarp or for use as a vapor/moisture barrier or retarder. Our choice is to recommend engineered films that are designed for this purpose, to block as much of the moisture, radon, methane and VOC’s as possible. On a microscopic level, the cell structure of the plastic films/liners varies. For liners that are going to be used to block deadly gases such as Radon, you want to insure that you get a liner that has a tight cell structure.
The engineered films are designed to last forever buried in the soil, where C&A film often completely breaks down within a couple of years. Have you ever dug up some old black plastic? Remember how torn and crusty it was?
It’s important that today’s vapor/moisture barriers or retarders should pass the ASTM E1745 Class A, B and C (standard for underslab vapor retarders in contact with soil or granular fill), especially since most homeowner’s insurance coverage for mold is very limited today. Builders are experiencing a much higher level of mold related repair costs and lawsuits since the time when most insurance companies changed their mold coverage to active leaks only.
Ask yourself how long the plastic needs to last. Does it need to hold up in the sun, high winds, or snow? Does is need to be fire retardant? Do you want string (Scrim) reinforced or not and why? How thick should the film be for your job? Do you want it to be padded, or self-adhesive? Is it going to be used in a high heat or humidity climate?
Learn about your choices for your job, and make an informed choice.

Are All Vapor Barriers Created Equal?
Jun 28th
This is an excellent question. It is important to know that not all plastics are created equal. For instance, that 4 mil and 6 mil Construction grade polyethylene sheeting in the construction aisle is the lowest grade of polyethylene sheeting available on the market at any given time. It is made from up to 25% post consumer recycled goods, reground resins, and the absolute least expensive resins that can be bought from any source in any location across the globe. These films are not guaranteed to be pinhole free, and can have quite a few defects that are acceptable in this type of film. The quality control for this type of film is the lowest in the plastic’s industry. While it has been an acceptable practice to use quite a bit of this type of plastic sheeting in the past as vapor retarders, that has been changing over the last couple of decades to a very large degree.
Today most experts feel very strongly that engineered films designed specifically for use as vapor retarders should be used as vapor retarders. These products are made from 100% virgin resins, and have excellent quality control. Most are tested to a standard called the ASTM E1745, which is the standard for vapor retarders in contact with soil or granular fill used under concrete slabs. These materials are engineered not to decay in this type of application, whereas most construction grade poly will begin breaking down almost immediately and will have lost most of its structural integrity within 2 years. How many times have you dug up plastic sheeting in your life that is just destroyed from being buried in the ground?.
It makes some difference what part of the country you are in, what kinds of humidity levels are common in your region, whether or not your home has a good quality vapor retarder under the slab, basement, or in the crawlspace. If you already have an excellent vapor retarder, then the one you use under your hardwood floor is far less critical. If you are putting a hardwood floor over a damp crawlspace, and use a poor quality vapor retarder, you are asking for a lot of problems with the hardwood flooring, and will likely suffer problems with buckling, warping, noisy flooring, lots of expansion and contraction, and often finish problems, just to name a few.
Should you be in an area where Radon is prevalent, or methane, then the use of a barrier with capabilities to retard these gasses becomes important also. Again these films are engineered to have a very tight cell structure capable of keeping these very small molecules from passing right through the membrane. These gasses, and to a very large extent water vapor pass quite easily through the cellular structure of common construction grade polyethylene (aka Visqueen).
If one wants an even better vapor retarder, then one might want to contact a plastics company specializing in vapor retarders so you can find out which is most appropriate for your application. The vapor retarder is fairly inexpensive insurance for having a great experience with a hardwood floor as compared with what can be a nightmare experience when the wrong product is used.

Why Retirement is Not Necessarily Good
Jun 28th
During my career, I’ve worked with people 55 and up. Some were members of the board of directors for non-profits in which I was employed. I also worked, for a time, in a seniors activity center dedicated to affluent and active seniors. I learned a lot about the impact of retirement on people’s lives and psyche.
I can tell you that “retirement”, claimed to be a “wonderful” experience, is not for many people.
Why? Some people liked working and when their retirement came, it was a major blow from which some never recovered.
It wasn’t only the person who was retiring for which there were effects but also their spouses. Some women who had been housewives all of their adult lives felt trapped by a husband who was now at home much of the time.
Executives found it particularly difficult because, all of a sudden, their calendar was clear after years of being jam-packed with meetings and social events. No one was interested in having lunch with them any longer – the phone was silent! It was a tremendous shock to their “modus operandi”. Many died very shortly after retirement of heart attacks.
For some, at first, it was exciting to do what they wanted when they wanted to do it. However, as they told me when I suggested how great it was not having to show up for work every day, there is only so much golf and crocquet a person can play, only so much traveling a person wants to do and so much of all the other hobbies and activities a person can do. The “thrill” wears thin after a while.
Those who succeeded in adjusting to “retirement” best were the ones who had some form of “job” or started a small business – they had the time, it gave them a social outlet and they earned some income whether they needed it not; we know that “job” and earning money in our society has meaning. Volunteering sometimes filled the bill, however, it had to be meaningful, purposeful volunteering; few volunteering jobs can be as purposeful as a job.
Most often they didn’t need the money. They had saved enough to meet their needs, their house was paid off and they were quite comfortable. However, sometimes their children or grandchildren got into financial difficulty and required financial assistance; a lot of money was diverted to those needs.
Either way, working was a much healthier way to live and most liked to work part-time — 3 or 4 days a week. Some companies begged them to stay on because smart companies understood the value of experience both in terms of productivity and in helping people new to the company.
Humans were not meant to “retire”. They were meant to stay active and have some purposeful work to do their entire lives perhaps not always at the same intensity but, then, when you have the experience, it’s not necessary to work at the high levels new people require. My grandparents worked their entire lives, not because they had to but because they wanted to. They were very comfortable financially and their children had also been successful in establishing themselves; there was no need – they wanted to.
I do believe that all humans should have that choice – retire or not. Semi-retirement is, of course, the best option. This is a good thing on many levels – social, psychological, physically and emotional.
Socially, the attitudes towards aging would also change if the retirement age was eliminated -aging is not a bad thing – it’s just a part of life and people don’t turn into non-people just because of age. Everyone needs social interaction.
For younger people, it would ease the “stress and strain” of raising families while intensely pursuing their careers knowing there would be a natural progression to their careers rather than a “rush to the top”.
It’s also a known fact that mixing age groups is beneficial for everyone. All you need do is look to cultures who value the contributions of all the members of their families.
We will likely keep many people out of hospitals, care facilities and isolation if we, as a society, adopt a better approach to retirement.
Financially – Many thousands of people did all the right things – saved their whole lives, bought their houses, raised their children, were good employees and good citizens. They were wiped out financially because of a severe turn in the economy or scams which took their life savings or losing a job at a critical moment or having their company pension plan disappear. These people need to work.
For younger people, the tax squeeze should be a major consideration. If older people who are able to work cannot find work, then some will draw on the public resources. As a consequence, when considering the “balloon” of baby boomers, it might have an impact on tax rates.
Psychologically – For all ages, attitudes would be healthier. Aging would be seen as a progression, not a moment in a person’s life that is less favorable. Like the Chinese culture where the elders teach younger people, it would offer a positive evolution in the workplace and a much saner approach to building a strong career. The older workers would benefit from the respect and purposefulness of their acquired knowledge and experience while younger employees’ career would benefit. The companies, therefore, with this strong foundation, would be better off structurally and economically.
Physically – Working keeps the brain challenged – solving the little problems which arise every day. It also keeps people “going somewhere” and often that is blended with exercise and physical activity.
Emotionally – Everyone, young or old, need to feel useful in some way – in some positive way, contributing to society. And interaction would be enhanced – everyone would see each other as people, not a number on a cake!
It is time for a better approach to retirement by making it a choice rather than a requirement. We would also be better off to look at alternative retirement options rather than you’re working today but not tomorrow!

Is Your Resin a Virgin – Should You Care?
Jun 26th
Believe it or not, in the plastics world virginity makes a big difference. In other parts of our lives I suppose it does also, but at least in my life it was never a life or death difference.
Now imagine you are a beautiful Koi swimming around in your new pond, made by your owner using a liner that contains anything other than 100% virgin resins. Things like post-consumer recycled content would most likely leave you and all your friends belly up in no time at all. What about that water bottle you are drinking from, do you know what would happen if the pond liner were made from anything containing less than 100% virgin resins? Or the food containers we are all “popping into the microwave” these days? Hmmm, now there is some food for thought!
Today in the plastics industries, we are scrambling to make everything using recycled content, regrind, post-consumer recycled content, all in an effort to be more green, to help our customers achieve LEED certified building status, for instance. Any plastics that can be reused in applications where nothing and nobody gets hurt, makes an enormous difference for our planet.
But many products are being used every day, containing post-consumer recycled content in applications where they are not good choices, and some can have significant negative effects on us and our pocketbooks. Have you ever dug up any plastic that has been buried in the backyard for a while, and it has pretty much disintegrated? That is called Construction and Agricultural Grade Polyethylene (often called Visqueen or C&A film). This stuff is made from the cheapest resins any producer can buy or find at the time of manufacture, and can even contain pinholes and runs. Is this a problem you ask?
Considering some of the places it gets used, the answer is a resounding YES!! For example, most building codes across this country do not require anything more than this grade of plastic for basement and under-slab moisture and vapor retarders that go under our homes and buildings to help keep moisture, and vapors such as Radon, Methane, VOC’s out of our living spaces.
Most homeowner’s insurance policies no longer cover mold or mildew damage unless there is an active leak proven. Many people did not even know when this change took place. Even fewer people know that for a few cents per square foot more, vapor retarders that block virtually all of the moisture and harmful vapors from coming into homes have been on the market for a good many years. Had they been used, who knows how much in claims could have been avoided and how many fewer people would be sick??? What is that cost?
Knowing whether your resin is a virgin can be important. For the moisture/vapor barrier application, I vote that you only bury virgins! And then only the ones made for this purpose that pass ASTM E-1745 Class A.

Six Tips For Becoming an Independent Consultant
Jun 20th
Many people think about life as an independent consultant, but something holds them back. Still, the dream may come back to them over and over. If you’ve ever contemplated becoming an independent consultant, you may want to think not just about the dream, but about what holds you back from achieving it.
Six tips for unblocking the road to independent consulting
* Why not? What’s holding you back from independent consulting? Write, draw, mindmap and brainstorm reasons you feel keep you from independent consulting.
* Go deeper. What’s scary about those reasons?
* Can you do anything to resolve those fears? For example, if you’re worried about having a stable income, perhaps you would start consulting part-time, use that income to build up an emergency fund, secure some stable clients, and plan to have a part-time job when you do move to full-time consulting.
* Are any of your concerns all or nothing scenarios? If you see things in black and white, are there any opportunities to bring in shades of gray? For example, if you see working on your own as a huge risk, could you involve partners, find a mentor, join a professional association, take a course or get involved in an online community?
* Talk to others to find out how they have tackled similar problems. Sometimes, by reaching out to others – whether they are mentors, teachers or colleagues – we can learn from the wisdom of experience, without having to suffer for that experience.
* Work on a plan for becoming a consultant.
Becoming an independent consultant may well be within your reach – if you’re willing to work out a plan for getting there. It’s often the lack of a plan that makes things feel out of control. If you can work out goals and obstacles and a plan for dealing with both, you may find yourself on the road to independent consulting.
